What is it?

If you google sleep apnea it’s going to tell you it is a “potentially life-threatening sleep disorder”, the risk factors are age and obesity, and it is more common in men. Google is not wrong. Apnea literally means “to stop breathing” or “no breath” hence sufferers tend to wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air and this can happen hundreds of times per night! That’s crazy! No wonder people with sleep apnea regularly feels tired after a full night of sleep.

The tongue relaxes into the throat causes air to stop flowing in the lungs, hence you stop breathing and your brain then wakes you up just enough to take a breath. Then you fall back asleep and the cycle begins again. Talk about restlessness!

Treatment

There are two kinds of treatment commonly used – CPAP machine (bulky and loud, we don’t really want this and if it can be avoided, let’s try to avoid it) or custom-fit oral appliance that comfortably fits your bottom jaw and helps prevent the base of your tongue from blocking your airway. This is where we come in.
