What are
wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, often not until the late teens or early twenties. Because most people don’t have enough room in their jaw to accommodate them, they frequently become ‘impacted’ (wedged in), pressing against neighbouring teeth and causing pain, infection, or decay.

That said, not everyone needs their wisdom teeth out. We’ll assess your situation and give you an honest recommendation.

Why trust Carrum Downs Family Dental with your wisdom teeth removal?

Our oral surgeon, Dr Naser Albarbari (MSc, MOMS Glasgow, FDS England, FDS Edinburgh), is a registered specialist in Australia with extensive experience removing wisdom teeth, including complex impacted cases. He works alongside our general dental team, including Dr Chris Ngo (DDS), to ensure you’re looked after at every stage.

Carrum Downs Family Dental is part of the My Dentist Network, one of Melbourne’s largest and most experienced dental groups.

The decision to recommend having your wisdom teeth removed will be assessed by an examination and x-ray, though ultimately this decision is yours.

Why do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?

Not all wisdom teeth have to be removed. Usually, the decision to recommend the extraction of wisdom teeth is made when there are symptoms (inflamed gums, swelling, pain), pathology (e.g., a cyst) or if a wisdom tooth is partially erupted (when part of the crown of the tooth has come through the gum, but not all of it). This is because partially erupted wisdom teeth are non-functional but very difficult to keep clean, which often leads to gum inflammation or decay.

Any recommendation we make will be based on a clinical examination and X-ray, and we’ll always respect that the final call is yours.

Like all forms of surgery, wisdom teeth removal contains risks that will be discussed by your dentist. An x-ray (OPG) will be required to determine the degree of these risks. However it should be remembered that removal of wisdom teeth are very common procedures.

FAQs

Do I need my wisdom teeth removed?

Not always. Your dentist will assess your situation with an examination and X-ray and let you know whether removal is recommended or whether monitoring is the better option.

In most cases, earlier is better. The procedure tends to be more straightforward in the late teens or early twenties, before the roots are fully formed and the surrounding bone becomes denser. Waiting until later in life can make recovery longer and the procedure more complex.

Costs range from $550 per tooth when performed by our oral surgery team, with interest-free payment plans available:

  • Starting from $42 a week over 12 months for all four wisdom teeth
  • No deposit required
  • Full quote provided before any treatment begins

Yes. IV sedation is available in-clinic at Carrum Downs Family Dental, so there’s no need to travel to a hospital or day surgery.

Get in touch with us as soon as possible. We’ll assess what’s going on and talk you through the most appropriate next steps.

Most health funds provide some cover for wisdom teeth removal, though this varies depending on your fund and level of extras cover. Carrum Downs Family Dental accepts all major health funds and is a preferred provider for Medibank, HCF, nib, CBHS and HIF. We recommend checking with your fund before your appointment.
